White Glove Delivery vs. Standard Delivery: What’s Actually Worth Paying For

Every furniture retailer, auction house, and equipment dealer offers some kind of delivery. The words on the checkout page, though, hide very different realities. Here is what “standard delivery” and “white glove delivery” actually mean once the truck arrives, and how to decide which one your purchase needs.

Standard Delivery: What You Get

Standard delivery, sometimes called threshold delivery, generally means the item arrives at your home or business and is brought inside the first dry area: the front door, the lobby, the garage. The crew leaves. Assembly, placement, and packaging removal are your problem. For a boxed bookshelf from a big-box store, that is often fine.

White Glove Delivery: What Changes

White glove delivery adds four things:

  1. Room-of-choice placement. The item goes where you actually want it — upstairs, downstairs, through the narrow hallway — not where it is convenient to drop it.
  2. Handling with protection. Floor protection, booties, doorjamb guards. Your home is treated like it matters.
  3. Assembly and setup. The sectional gets joined, the treadmill gets built and leveled, the artwork gets hung.
  4. Debris removal. Every box, crate, and scrap of packing leaves on the truck.

When White Glove Is Worth It

Buy this level of service when: the item is heavy, fragile, or valuable; stairs or tight access are involved; assembly is complex; it is going into a finished, furnished space you care about; or it is a commercial install where downtime costs money. Furniture, antiques, art, fitness equipment, and medical devices almost always justify it.

Skip it when: the item is small, light, and simple to assemble, and you genuinely do not mind breaking down the boxes yourself.

The Hidden Cost of Cheap Delivery

The most expensive delivery is the one that damages your item or your home. A scratched hardwood floor, a cracked stone tabletop, or a dropped treadmill costs far more than the difference between standard and white glove. Ask any delivery company for their damage rate before you book. Ours is under 1%.
